Artist's Comments

I went out to the causeway to try my luck at sunsets on a beautiful breezy evening and what I discovered is that my tripod just isn't suitable. I didn't end up with anything that was sharply focused and can only put it down to the slow shutter speed combined with the breeze and the unstable camera mount. I did think it worked for this shot though.

After taking some shots of this fisherman I went over to talk with him and what he told me only reinforced my opinion of net fishing. He dumped about 9 fish from his net and some were small trout size while others were large catfish size so I asked what they were. They were all mullet and he said he was after the smaller ones to use as bait fish. I have no problem with that. He left them floundering on the beach while he took his net and went back in only to come back with another load. I asked what he was going to use the big ones for and he said they were good eating but all he wanted was bait fish but he wasn't going to put the big ones in because they keep getting in the way! Away he went again while the fish continued to flop around on the beach. I was speechless and growing angrier by the minute but I didn't know what to do about this horrible treatment and possible waste of fish. I went back to my truck but I did stick around long enough to watch him throw them back in when he was done. I have to wonder how many will survive. I don't think I will ever understand or accept net fishing anymore than I understand catch and release!

really nice pic. I wish I didn't read the artist comments. It's sad that he's wasting fish like that.

Thanks.

Part of me really wanted to go and scoop up the big ones and take them home to eat and part of me kept arguing saying that it would only promote what was happening. I'm still arguing with myself and wish I knew the right answer because undoubtedly I'll run into the situation again.

Thanks for the comment on the picture. I like it too as a photo but the circumstance really had me upset. I have no problem with catching and using the fish but if you're damaging them or wasting them then I have a problem and not knowing what to do about it had me really fired up. I'm sorry it ruined things for you and maybe I shouldn't have written it but I was hoping for suggestions as for what to do when I run into it again. I've been trying to find a law or something about it but haven't found anything so far.

You didn't ruin it. It's a really nice pic and your comment just shows there is more to a story than one image. Have you checked your country's ministry of fish and game? they might be able to help.

That's a great suggestion and I've been to the website for it and for the county but haven't found anything.
